Capacity, in detail

What the house holds

Thirty-four seated is a real number and it is a conditional one. Here is exactly what it depends on, and what the house holds when the condition is not met.

  • thirty-four seated, garden usable
  • sixteen seated, indoors alone
  • sixty standing
Thirty-four seated is the parlour and the garden together and it assumes the garden is usable. Indoors alone the house seats sixteen at the long table and about ten more at the garden-level table, in a different room. That is the number to plan a February wedding around.

What "thirty-four seated" actually assumes

Thirty-four seated is the parlour and the garden together and it assumes the garden is usable. Indoors alone the house seats sixteen at the long table and about ten more at the garden-level table, in a different room. That is the number to plan a February wedding around.

Split another way: the parlour and the garden-level table between them seat about sixteen at the long table in the parlour, which is a room of twenty-four by sixteen feet, plus the rest of the thirty-four in about eleven hundred square feet of garden. Take the garden out of the arithmetic — because it is raining, because it is December, or simply because the party would rather be indoors — and the number the house actually seats is the parlour's own sixteen, not a smaller version of thirty-four.

Planning a date in October

Standard rate with a small uplift through October and November, which are the two months this part of Queens is at its best. October and November are also the two months a garden-dependent seated count is most likely to be tested by the weather, which is exactly why this page exists rather than leaving thirty-four to stand alone on the events page. This house does not promise the garden will be usable on any given day — see We do not promise quiet, and we do not promise the garden — so a date planned around the higher number should have an honest answer ready for the lower one. That answer is sixteen at the long table in the parlour, and it is worth deciding on the seating plan before the invitations go out, not on the morning of.

The garden itself

Why the garden number moves

Aspect
South and west. It is in sun from about eleven in the morning until the roofline takes it at six in the evening.
Surface
Brick paving over the terrace nearest the house, and grass beyond it. The grass is not a lawn in February.
Seating
A table that seats ten under the pergola, and stacking chairs for twenty more in the garden store.
Boundary
A brick wall on three sides, about seven feet, which is what makes it quiet.
Cooking
A charcoal grill, which is the only fire permitted in the garden. No fire pit, no pizza oven and nothing propane.
Lighting
Festoon lighting on the pergola and along the wall, on a timer that goes off at eleven.
Access
Level from the garden apartment. Down an external stair of eight steps from the parlour floor.

Overnight, separately from seated

Seated and standing capacity are about the day of the event. A separate number, and a smaller one, is how many people can actually stay the night once the party is over: eleven, across the house's own bedrooms and its one mezzanine bed. There is no twelfth bed, whatever the seated count for the day was.
