Accessibility

This is a house of 1912 with a stoop, three floors and no lift. What follows is what the building actually does, in enough detail to decide from, rather than a word like "limited" that leaves the deciding to you on the day you arrive.

  • three apartments, three different entrances
  • No lift, on any floor
  • Written arrival, a week before you travel

What the building does

Level throughout, once you are inside the garden apartment
Three steps DOWN from the pavement to the garden door, and no ramp — the pavement is four feet from the wall. Past that door there is no step at all: it is the shortest route into the building and the only apartment with no internal stair.
Level access from the garden apartment to the garden
A single threshold of about an inch at the terrace door.
Doorways
The garden apartment's internal doors are thirty-two inches clear. The bathroom door is twenty-nine, which is the narrowest door in that apartment.
Bathroom
The garden bathroom has a bath with a shower over it. A grab rail can be fitted to the bath wall on request with a fortnight's notice.
Written arrival
Everything about arriving is in writing and in photographs a week before, so nothing depends on finding a person.
Assistance dogs
Welcome in every apartment. Tell us and the apartment is prepared for it.

What it does not

There is no lift
The parlour floor is five steps up the stoop. The loft is those five plus two internal flights, the second of which is steep and turns.
The garden apartment has three steps down
There is no ramp and the stoop cannot take one — the pavement is four feet from the wall.
No wet room and no roll-in shower
The parlour has a walk-in shower with a two-inch upstand. The loft shower has a tray.
The loft mezzanine is a ladder-stair
It is not a bed anybody should reach who is not confident on a ladder.
The garden is reached by an external stair from the parlour floor
Eight steps with a handrail on one side.
No hearing loop and no visual fire alert as standard
A portable vibrating smoke alarm can be fitted in any apartment with a fortnight's notice. Ask, and it is done before you arrive.

Ask us the question. If the question you have is not answered above, telephone and ask it. A measurement nobody has taken is a measurement we will go and take, and a straight answer is better for everybody than a booking that has to be undone at the door.

Why this page will not call the house "accessible"

Neither "accessible" nor "step-free" is true of this building, and writing either one and hoping it reads as a helpful shorthand would only move the discovery to the day a guest arrives with luggage and finds five steps and no lift. What this page gives instead is what it opened with: every measurement this house has actually taken, in both directions, at the same size.

If the question you have is not answered above, telephone and ask it. A measurement nobody has taken is a measurement we will go and take, and a straight answer is better for everybody than a booking that has to be undone at the door.

Ask the specific question

A measurement nobody has taken yet is one we will go and take. Telephone before you book rather than after.
