Self check-in

There is no key and no front desk. Every door opens on a code, the code works from 3:00pm on the day you arrive whatever hour you actually get there, and this page explains exactly how that works and what happens if it does not.

  • Code live 3:00pm to 11:00am the next day
  • twenty hours on the shortest possible stay
  • Nobody meets you, and nobody sleeps in the building

How it works

From the e-mail to the door

  1. Seven days before The arrival note arrives by e-mail: the door code, which door it opens, the photographs of the entrance, and what to do if the code does not work.
  2. The day of arrival The code works from three in the afternoon. There is nobody to meet — the door is a keypad and it is the only key there is.
  3. Inside The apartment is yours. Nobody enters during a stay unless you ask, and the cleaner does not come mid-stay on a booking of under seven nights.
  4. The morning you leave Out by eleven, the code stops working at eleven, and the bins go in the store under the stoop. There is no key to hand back.

The window the code is actually live for

The code starts working at 3:00pm on the day you arrive and stops at 11:00am on the day you leave, whatever the hour you actually walk up to the door. On the shortest possible stay, that is nine hours to midnight and eleven more into the following morning — twenty hours in total, and none of it depends on anybody being awake to let you in.

A later checkout, until 12:00pm, costs $40 and is only available when the stay arriving after yours allows it — which a whole-house changeover usually does not. Ask when you book rather than on the morning itself.

What is actually at the door

A keypad, brass and unremarkable, fixed beside the door it opens. There is no lettering on it beyond the digits, and there is nothing to photograph there that would tell you anything the code and the arrival e-mail do not already say — which is why there is no photograph of it anywhere on this site. The picture above is the hall on the other side of the door, not the hardware.

The code arrives by e-mail a week before arrival, with photographs of the entrance itself so the right door is obvious from the pavement before a case is even out of the car. If the code does not work, the same e-mail says what to do, and the telephone number reaches a person rather than a recording.

Nobody sleeps in the building. There is no front desk and nobody sleeps in the building. If something goes wrong at two in the morning the telephone is answered by a person who lives twenty minutes away, and that is what a small guest house can promise rather than a night porter it does not employ.

Check the dates you want

The calendar is live. It shows what is free, it will not sell the same night twice, and it prints the whole total — cleaning fee included — before it asks for a name.
