The Parlour Apartment: Bay window to the street, twelve-foot ceilings

Parlour floor

The Parlour Apartment

The front rooms of the original house, with the bay window, the twelve-foot ceiling and the plaster cornice that the restoration kept. It is the largest of the three and the one people book when they want the house to look like the photographs.

  • Sleeps four
  • two bedrooms
  • two nights minimum

Who the parlour apartment suits

A couple who want the best room in the house, or four people who intend to cook.

Five steps up the stoop from the pavement, then level. No lift.

Parlour floor

Room by room

Parlour
The front room, twenty-four feet by sixteen under a twelve-foot ceiling, with the bay window and a sofa that does not fold out into anything.
Kitchen and dining
Behind the parlour, with a table for six. This is the second kitchen, and it is the one a whole-house let cooks in.
Bedroom one
A king bed, a wardrobe, and the quieter of the two aspects — it looks over the garden.
Bedroom two
A double bed and a window onto the street. It is the room that hears the avenue.
Bathroom
A walk-in shower, a basin in the original marble, and a window.

Included, and worth knowing first

What comes with the parlour apartment

In the rate

  • The large kitchen: a five-ring range, a double oven, a dishwasher, and worktop enough for four people cooking at once
  • A dining table that seats six, and two extension leaves that take it to ten
  • Bed linen, towels, and a starter set of coffee, tea, salt, pepper and oil
  • Wired and wireless internet
  • The key to the garden, which is reached by the internal stair

Worth knowing first

  • The bay window is single-glazed on the inner sash, because the restoration kept the original frames — the front bedroom hears Roosevelt Avenue
  • Five steps up the stoop and no lift

In practice

Cooking, and what you will hear

The kitchen

The one that makes a whole-house let work.

What you will hear

The bay window is single-glazed on the inner sash, because the restoration kept the original frames — the front bedroom hears Roosevelt Avenue

An apartment is not the house. An apartment booking is a private apartment, not a private house: the other two apartments may be let on the same nights, and the garden, the stoop and the stair are shared. The whole-house let is the one that takes the building off sale.
