six ways to arrive

Getting around

Every route into and out of the house, in the order most guests actually use them, with the honest version of the two that are not straightforward: the car and the bicycle.

six ways to move

Railroad, elevated line, bus, on foot, by car, by bicycle

The commuter railroad
61st Street - Woodside is on the main line. Penn Station in about thirteen minutes, and it is the fastest way into Manhattan from this house by a distance.
The elevated line
The same building, upstairs. It runs to Queensboro Plaza and on into Manhattan, all night, about every ten minutes off peak.
The bus
Roosevelt Avenue runs east and west and is the route to LaGuardia. The stop is at the corner of 61st Street.
On foot
Sunnyside is fifteen minutes west, Jackson Heights twenty minutes east, and the whole of Roosevelt Avenue is a walk rather than a journey.
By car
Alternate-side parking on 61st Street, free overnight on the side streets, and no driveway. Guests who drive usually give up on the second day and use the railroad.
By bicycle
Two bicycles live in the garden store and either apartment may use them. There is no charge and there is no third bicycle.

The specific numbers, together

The neighbourhood page names the station; this is what it is worth in minutes.

  • Four minutes on foot from the 61st Street - Woodside station, which is the elevated line and the commuter railroad in one building
  • The commuter railroad reaches Penn Station in about thirteen minutes and the elevated line in about twenty-five
  • The airport bus to LaGuardia stops on Roosevelt Avenue, eight minutes' walk, and takes about twenty minutes with no traffic
  • The bus along Roosevelt Avenue stops at the corner of 61st Street

By car, honestly

Alternate-side parking on 61st Street; the side streets are free overnight and the house does not have a driveway

No driveway. If a car is part of the plan, the side streets are the answer rather than the house itself — there is nowhere on the property to leave one.

Most guests who arrive by car use it for the trip in and then leave it on a side street for the rest of the stay, because the railroad and the elevated line reach more of the city faster than driving into it does.

Check the dates before the directions
