Where this house stops

The house is not step-free

A 1912 house with a stoop and three floors. One apartment is nearly level; the other two are not.

  • No lift anywhere in the building
  • One apartment is level once you are through the door
  • Every measurement is published, not estimated

What "accessible" would have to mean, and why it does not apply here

It would be easy to write "accessible on request" and let the sentence do nothing. This building has five steps up to the parlour floor, two internal flights above that, three steps down to the garden apartment and no lift anywhere. The accessibility page measures all of it, including the doorways and the bathroom, so that the decision is made before the taxi rather than at the door.

This is a house of 1912 with a stoop, three floors and no lift. What follows is what the building actually does, in enough detail to decide from, rather than a word like "limited" that leaves the deciding to you on the day you arrive.

What the building actually does

What the building does

Level throughout, once you are inside the garden apartment
Three steps DOWN from the pavement to the garden door, and no ramp — the pavement is four feet from the wall. Past that door there is no step at all: it is the shortest route into the building and the only apartment with no internal stair.
Level access from the garden apartment to the garden
A single threshold of about an inch at the terrace door.
Doorways
The garden apartment's internal doors are thirty-two inches clear. The bathroom door is twenty-nine, which is the narrowest door in that apartment.
Bathroom
The garden bathroom has a bath with a shower over it. A grab rail can be fitted to the bath wall on request with a fortnight's notice.
Written arrival
Everything about arriving is in writing and in photographs a week before, so nothing depends on finding a person.
Assistance dogs
Welcome in every apartment. Tell us and the apartment is prepared for it.

What it does not

There is no lift
The parlour floor is five steps up the stoop. The loft is those five plus two internal flights, the second of which is steep and turns.
The garden apartment has three steps down
There is no ramp and the stoop cannot take one — the pavement is four feet from the wall.
No wet room and no roll-in shower
The parlour has a walk-in shower with a two-inch upstand. The loft shower has a tray.
The loft mezzanine is a ladder-stair
It is not a bed anybody should reach who is not confident on a ladder.
The garden is reached by an external stair from the parlour floor
Eight steps with a handrail on one side.
No hearing loop and no visual fire alert as standard
A portable vibrating smoke alarm can be fitted in any apartment with a fortnight's notice. Ask, and it is done before you arrive.

Ask us the question. If the question you have is not answered above, telephone and ask it. A measurement nobody has taken is a measurement we will go and take, and a straight answer is better for everybody than a booking that has to be undone at the door.

Apartment by apartment

The Garden Apartment
Three steps down from the pavement to the door. Level inside once you are in.
The Parlour Apartment
Five steps up the stoop from the pavement, then level. No lift.
The Loft Apartment
Five steps up the stoop and two flights of internal stairs. The second flight is steep and turns.

The Whole House is all three at once, so a booking of the whole house inherits every one of those step counts rather than escaping any of them — the garden level is nearly level, and the top floor is still two flights up regardless of which apartment a particular guest sleeps in that week.

If a straight answer matters more than a hopeful one

If the question you have is not answered above, telephone and ask it. A measurement nobody has taken is a measurement we will go and take, and a straight answer is better for everybody than a booking that has to be undone at the door.

Read the full measurements, including doorway widths and the bathroom in the garden apartment, on the accessibility page, or ask a specific question by telephone before booking rather than after arriving.

Seven more things this house does not do

What this house does not do

We are not a hotel

No front desk, no porter, no room service, no daily housekeeping and nobody in the building overnight.

What this house does not do

Nobody here can marry you

The ceremony can happen in the garden or the parlour. The legal marriage is a separate thing and it is not ours.

Check the dates you want

The calendar is live. It shows what is free, it will not sell the same night twice, and it prints the whole total — cleaning fee included — before it asks for a name.
